Pet Parties - The latest Craze

As the baby-boomers are taking the lead, in ever-growing numbers, as pet owners, so is pet spoiling and the 'special pet events' phenomenon. Baby-boomers, who are primarily empty-nesters are replacing their grown children with pets and spoiling those pets as they used to spoil their children.

Pet parties are one of the most recent crazes; birthday and holiday parties with and for pets. They consist of activities and goodies for both the pets and their humans. Pet 'birthday' parties top the list, especially for dogs and then cat parties rank as a distant second. They vary from a group of pet owners and their pets going to lunch or supper at a pet cordial restaurant to parties at the park or backyard house events. Pet-care facilities (doggy daycare sites and pet hotels) are an additional one option to think if you don't have room for a home party.

Food And Dessert

As with Halloween... With pet 'dress-up events' or just having your pet at a accepted conferrence or party, there are lots of factors to consider. Will the pets on the guest list get along? Are your human guests pet focused sufficient and willing to keep an eye on their pet as well as declare a pet clear environment at the party for everyone, while still having a good time themselves? And is your pet the type who likes being around other animals and groups of people, or is this party verily for you?

There are many restaurants that are pet cordial these days so will cordon off an area, as they do for kiddy parties, for your pet event; some even furnish decorations and goodies.

But if you prefer to do it yourself and go all out, here are a few suggestions:

Indoor Party Activities:

o Pick a fun theme. Party favors and decorations are now ready for most types of pet parties.

o Have each doggy (kitty, bird, monkey, pot bellied pig, etc) guest come in costume and have a mini-fashion show or have your guests and their humans come in matching costumes! Give prizes for best costume(s), funniest, most original, etc.

o Bring Kong type toys, one for each doggy guest, filled with cheese or peanut butter; catnip or tuna for the kitties.

o Have fullness of training treats, snacks and biscuits on hand and hold contests for best sit, stay, shake, roll over... (perhaps for most finicky for the felines?).

o Bring a good furnish of rope toys for a doggy tug of war! You'll find that sometimes the humans will share as well.

o Paw mural painting can be done inside or out as long as you cover the floor well.

Outdoor Party Activities:

o A silly pet trick contest is a great event, indoors and out, but face parties lend themselves to a greater variety of tricks. Give a prize for 1st, 2nd and 3rd or just for first prize and then give a treat to the others for participation.

o If you have mostly the same types (or breeds) of pets or groups that are the same sizes, dog (or piggy and kitty... If you can motivate them) races can be fun. (Dachshund or Chihuahua races are all the time funny.)

o Bring sufficient balls so there is at least one ball or Frisbee per doggy guest and play free-for-all fetch or wands with fake birds, small balls or catnip toys tied at the end for the cats.

o Agility tool events like a tunnel for the dogs to race through is a good addition; make sure you have lots of training bits or other treats to offer them when they run through successfully!

o Water activities like swimming events in the pool for clear dog breeds during the warm season are inherent activities to consider, or bobbing for biscuits using a small tub or kiddie pool with water and then tossing in some biscuits. Whoever gets them out the quickest wins!

o Also, if at the park, make sure you think protection issues like portable fencing or stakes to attach leashes, so the dogs and their humans can relax for awhile.

food:

o Make sure there is fullness of water - furnish detach bowls for each pet guest (possibly personalized for them to take home) filled with mineral, filtered or even Smart(Tm) water.

o Order goodies from the local or online doggy (pet) bakeries and party suppliers, or better yet bake them yourself.

o Have an outdoor bar-b-que and fix a extra supper for both the pet guests and their humans with their own grilled boneless steaks or chicken for the doggies or tuna and salmon for the kitties!

o And of course, you must have a birthday cake! You can make it yourself or order one from a local or online pet bakery. A small slice of carrot cake or verily any other cake as long as it doesn't consist of chocolate could be served to most pets as well their humans at a extra occasion, but in most cases you will probably want a extra one for the pets and one for their humans.

o There are also many human goodies (candy and baked goods) shaped like pets, bones, or pet articles that can add fun to the party.

o A goodie bag to take home filled with unique biscuits, doggy ice cream, dehydrated meats (dehydrated fish, a catnip toy, cat grass or grass seeds and gourmand cat desserts for the kitties), and a small pet safe toy, along with their personalized water bowl is a nice touch.

Make sure you label the food appropriately, especially at a buffet-style meal, to ensure that no citizen accidentally bite into a dog or cat treat or that the pets don't get too many human treats!

Regardless of the style of the party or the range of food served, you will need to think both the fun of all the party guests as well as the protection of the food you pick for the citizen and the dogs (cats or birds, etc) at the event. You might want to skip serving chocolate and onions completely, keep alcohol to a minimum and have a extra (pet free) smoking area to keep the guest of honor and friends from eating the butts. Discussing allergies and protection matters of the pets, children and adults at the party in strengthen will prevent any surprises for the day of the party, as well, possibly as part of the invitation Rsvp request.

Kids have will have fun participating in the games and giving out treats to the winners, so consist of them if you have any children on your guest list. But be sure to think supervision, and I would advise limiting the whole of children present. If you do have children or grandchildren at home, consist of them in the preparing and give them jobs and responsibilities at the party.

And finally, make sure you have a way of capturing all this fun on film! A volunteer photographer or videographer is great for memories and someone taking Polaroid's for the costume contest, to send home with guests, is all the time a great touch!

Future articles will consist of throwing a 'fancy' doggy party and 'pet' party recipes. But for now, for those of you baking and development the party food on your own, here is a fun recipe for your human guests (and a small sliver, minus the Tootsie Rolls, won't hurt the pets either):

Famous Kitty Litter Cake

(Several variations of this recipe can be found online)

Ingredients:

1 spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 white cake mix
2 large packages vanilla instant pudding mix, ready
1 large box vanilla sandwich cookies
green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Rolls

1 new kitty litter pan
1 new plastic kitty litter pan liner
1 new pooper scooper

Directions:

Prepare cake mixes (or scratch cake) and bake agreeing to directions (any size pans).
Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.
Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix until completely colored.

When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. Important: mix in just sufficient of the pudding to moisten it. You don't want it too soggy. Integrate gently.

Line a new, clean kitty litter box. Put the cake/pudding/cookie mixture into the litter box.
Put three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie rolls bury them in the mixture. Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly on top of all things -- this is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.

Heat 3 Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until approximately melted. Scrape them on top of the cake; sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Spread remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top; take one and heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the kitty litter box, sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs. Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around for a truly disgusting effect!

Have a great party!

Lose The Weight, Not The Fun, Of Summer Cookouts

It's summertime!

And with it comes barbecues, picnics, celebrations, and food Temptations. If you are trying to lose weight, control your blood sugar, cut back on saturated fats for heart health, or make any other dietary changes to enhance your well-being, this can spell failure or the idea of deprivation. So what is a man to do? Shut themselves inside and come to be a recluse? Well, that Is an option, but not one that would probably make you very happy!

Food And Dessert

Commit to doing things differently from now on. Parties, cookouts, and social events are going to be a part of the rest of your life. It is time to leave the "kid in a candy store" mentality behind. You can still enjoy parties without development your body pay the price.

Below are some tips for handling picnics/cookouts, parties, and other celebrations with greater ease (for your mind and body).

* The number one thing to do is go with a plan in mind. Stop pretending you do not know what your M. O. (pattern) is at such events. You have had that "V-8 moment" after overindulging at a party far too many times to fool yourself anymore. Think ahead and rule what your strategy is going to be as far as eating (and even drinking). Then, stick to it! You may not do everything you planned to at first, but do not let that be an excuse for giving up. Keep reviewing your attempts and challenges, and rule to do a slight best each time based on what you learned the former time.

* Never go to a social event hungry, unless you are planning to have a Meal there. You are just setting yourself up to overeat or eat junky food. The "saving-calories-for-later" strategy does not work well for So many reasons. Eat before you go if you know there is going to be a lot of finger food. Have a balanced, wholesome meal at home and maybe just plan to have a small dessert there.

* Do not eat anything unless it is on a plate and served all at once (that includes you fixing the plate). Picking at food here and there makes it difficult for you to process how much you have eaten. By the time your stomach feels the stretch and sends the signal to the brain to turn off the appetite, you have already overeaten.

* Drink water or Perrier (Not soda water or flavored water) instead of alcohol, or at least have 1 or 2 glasses of water between alcoholic drinks. This will help counteract the dehydrating effects of alcohol, sell out unnecessary calories/sugar, and preclude you from becoming inebriated!

* Bring your own wholesome dish to share-something you have discovered and completely enjoy. This assures that you will have at least one thing you can eat there that will not sabotage your wholesome eating efforts, and makes you look like a thoughtful guest (momma always told me to never be an empty-handed guest). You might even find habitancy request you for the recipe!

* Barbecues are often an overload of starches: bread/rolls/buns, potato salad, pasta salad, potato chips, baked beans, etc. Piling your plate with high-glycemic, low-nutrition carbs such as these can sabotage your best efforts at life-time weight loss unless you learn to be smart about them. Either choose to have only one of them, along with a meat and some greens, or a smaller serving of a few of them.

* Learn to dodge or deflect people's well-intentioned urges for you to eat. If man asks you if you tried "such & such" yet, you can say "Yes, and it was great" or "No, I'm full right now" or try, "Oh, I can't eat that; it gives me gas" (if you are the type of man who is comfortable delivering a line like that). habitancy will continue to offer you food (sometimes even being insistent about it, which is usually based on their own insecurities), but continue to hold your ground and repeat the same phrase again. (If you have a particularly hard time with this, I recommend you institution some phrases in the mirror until you get comfortable saying them and they will more indeed roll off the tongue when you need them. Seriously; try it).

* Focus on the fun, not the food. Unless the invitation said, "Come to a food-tasting party," there is some other presuppose for the event. Keep your focus on that. Use your mouth for talking more than eating. Keep your hands occupied with a bottle or glass of water. Involve yourself in any activities available.

Say Cheese: Picturing the excellent Wine Combo

The combination of wine and cheese may sound a petite cliché, perhaps, dare I say, even a petite cheesy. Still, since their invention, wine and cheese have been a dazzling duo, going together like strawberries and champagne, Merlot and steak, boxed wine and Taco Bell. Doing it their way, yes their way, wine and cheese are the Laverne and Shirley of the alcohol industry.

It may seem odd that two such detach entities have the quality to do this. After all, these two products come from seemingly opposite poles: wine is made to perfection; cheese can be processed to fit into a spray can and forego refrigeration. Wine is served with lobster; cheese is sprinkled on top of spaghetti and meatballs. Pouring wine is synonymous with sophistication, cutting cheese is a euphemism for passing wind. Nonetheless, when consumed together, cheese compliments wine like no other food, it's as if chunks of cheddar continually go up to bottles of Riesling to tell them how well they've aged.

Food And Dessert

The quarterly rules of food pairings - pairing white wine with white meat and red wine with red meat - do not apply to cheese and wine coupling, as most cheese is white or orange, or, if kept for too long, white and orange with soft green spots. Thus, in order to corollary in a permissible pairing, we have to look beyond, viewing through the holes of a Swiss piece of cheese into an entirely dissimilar world.

Generally, there are any guidelines that can be followed to accomplish maximum wine/cheese pairing potential. Many habitancy believe that the flavor of the cheese and the wine should be similar. For example, a strong or sharp cheese should be paired with a full-bodied wine, where a subtle and light cheese should be paired with a light or sweetmeat wine. This kind of equality helps keep the two entities on the same level, disallowing one to overpower the other. Others believe that the wine and the cheese should hail from the same region: it is their belief that a French wine and a French cheese go together as well as beer and the state of Wisconsin. Still, others believe that it all comes down to texture: red wine should go with hard cheese and white wine should go with soft cheese.

Some of the most generally loved examples of wine and cheese combos are Brie and Cabernet; Mild Cheddar with Pinot Blanc; Strong Cheddar with Cabernet, Rioja, or Sauvignon Blanc; Colby or Monterey Jack with Riesling; Feta with Beaujolais; Provolone with Chardonnay; Stilton and Port; and Baby Swiss - Baby Swiss of procedure being what happens when two pieces of cheese for real love each other - and Chardonnay.

When you for real get to the nitty gritty, wine and cheese, like whatever that involves eating or drinking, all comes down to private taste. There are for real hundreds of dissimilar types of wine and hundreds of dissimilar types of cheese; everyone is bound to find something they like, even if it seems to go face the normal guidelines. There may be habitancy who find that a sharp cheddar is great with a light Vernaccia. There may be habitancy who find feta to go exceptionally well with champagne. There may be habitancy who swear that the duo of a 1787 Chateau Lafite and a bag of cheese puffs is the many combination at all. Anything, either ordinary or not, can go. When it comes to wine, there are thousands of ways to say cheese.

How Is Your Table Etiquette?

Never start eating until everybody has their food, unless the host tells you to begin. Do not pour wine until everybody at your table is ready. It is suitable for whether gender to pick up the check. The determining factor is who extended the invitation.

The tableware is set up for you to work from left to right. Your setting ordinarily would consist of a napkin, supper fork, salad fork, supper plate, knife and soup for soup, provided all these courses are on the table. The cutting edge of the knife blade turned in toward the plate.

Wine glasses go to the right of water glasses, slightly near to the edge of the table. Bread and butter plates go directly above the fork with the butter knife set across the place. Bread is broken off and eaten one piece at a time. Position salad plates to the left of the napkin and fork. The host will begin to eat first.

Some rules to ensue are:

Never dunk food. Chew with the mouth closed. Eat fried chicken with a knife and fork, unless you are at a picnic. If a company occasion, the conversation should focus on business. Always spoon the food away from you. If soup bowl has handles, you may drink. If you are in an interview, only order one drink. Never turn your glass upside down to decline drinks. Never wave silverware when talking. Never write on the tablecloth. Pass food to your right. Pass liquids and gravies with ladle. Pass salt and pepper together. If you must remove something from your mouth with your fingers, place it on the edge of your plate. Blow your nose quietly--- without excuse. Pat the area around your mouth with your napkin instead of wiping across your mouth. Do not smoke. Eat sticky foods, such as cake with a fork. French Fries too! Ask permission when finished. Thank the man who asked you or made the meal. When your glass is half-empty, stop drinking and wait for a refill. If you use sugar, place the empty wrapper under your plate. Leave a small measure of food on your plate. Never move/stack your plate/ hand your plate to the server. Make your decision for your order in a timely manner. Leave your problems at home. Watch voice quality. Be on time. Be kind to bistro personnel.

Fun With Fondue

When you're craving relax food, fondue is always a favorite. Popular in America in the 1970's, fondue is back with an urban twist that tempts the palate with much more than the plain cheese, hot oil and easy chocolate pots of yore.

Originating in Switzerland many centuries ago, Fondue (Fawn-Doo) is French for the word "melt" and is considered their national dish. The harsh winters of the Alpine mountains meant isolation from the covering world for months at a time with slight food supplies. The only easily ready ingredients in the villages were cheese, bread and wine. As the winter dragged on, the cheeses made the old summer began to dry out and spurred the villagers to melt them and create a tasty, fulfilling meal.

Food And Dessert

You don't have to be an Alpine villager to enjoy these easy concoctions. A fondue party just might be just the thing you've been searching for to enjoy with family and friends.

Most any food can be "cooked" in a fondue pot and fondue parties are a great way to enrapt your guests for an whole evening with good food, good wine, mingling and great conversation.

The party can be set up in stations or the guests can be seated at tables in small groupings. If your knees are still in good shape, it is fun to sit on pillows on the floor nearby the coffee table. As long as the pots are certainly accessible without a long reach for anyone, the set up can be most anywhere.  ensue the tips below to create a exquisite fondue that will amaze and satisfy your hungry party guests.

Fondue Pots and Utensils

Broth pots should be a heavy, garage metal over a hot flame that keeps the contents bubbling. The primary ceramics fondue pot is called a "caklon." Ceramic pots are best for cheese and chocolate fondues. Sterno, alcohol, and gelled fuel capsules are designed to keep the pots boiling vigorously. Tea lights or diffusers on the bases of the pots may be used to keep the pots warm. Fondue forks and bamboo sticks are best for spearing bread, meat, vegetables, fruit and confections. Bamboo skewers allow more than one piece of meat at a time to be cooked on them. Soak them in water to prevent burning while touching the pot. Small Asian baskets work well for dipping delicate fish in broths. These can be purchased at Asian markets. Fondue plates, dinner forks and plenty of colorful, festive napkins are requisite for gracefully eating the cooked fondue.
Cheese Fondue

Prevent cheese fondue from burning by using a heavy metal pot with an enamel or cast iron base or a heavy glazed ceramics pot. When organizing the party, the planner needs to Think the bride-to-be's taste, but also the guests. When going to a restaurant, it is good to choose a bistro that offers a collection of options. After all, there may be people at the party with extra dietary requirements such as those who are dieting, have diabetes, are vegetarian or vegan, or who have food allergies. If the invitations are sent out soon enough, extra dietary requirements may be given to the planner when responding and she can then go from there to plan the menu.

Food And Dessert

Of course, if the bride-to-be is set on going to her beloved bistro and it only serves a positive type of food, be sure to apprise the guests. They may want to eat beforehand then just munch on something small at the party.

If the party is being held at a place other than a restaurant, food will need to be provided, but the diets of others should still be carefully when planning the menu. If it is being catered, see if there is a vegetarian plate ready or one that is low in fat and/or calories. The menu can be straightforward or elaborate, based on what the bride would like and the budget for the party. The planner may also want to take into account the party activities. If the party is merely a conferrence of family and friends, a heavy meal may be more appropriate. But, if the party is going to go out for the night for some type of activity, the planner may want to keep the menu simple.

This can forestall double or triplicate items as well as let know what else may need to be covered, such as a bread or dessert. Regardless, the planner should not be the only one responsible for setting up the food and cleaning up afterwards - she wants to have a good time as well! Others should offer to help make sure all things is set up properly before the party starts and that all things is cleaned up after the party.

There are many distinct types of menus that can be planned. Something straightforward like grilled chicken, beef, potatoes, and vegetables make a nice easy meal that makes for a relatively easy clean up. Even simpler is a collection of sandwiches (don't forget a vegetarian option) with chips and raw vegetables with dips. A party with great finger foods such as wings, pinwheels, cheese balls, meatballs, dips, raw vegetables, and sausage balls is commonly always a hit. Don't forget the drinks either. This should also include a collection such as a punch, soft drinks, tea, and water for those trying to cut out the caffeine.

The most prominent thing to remember when planning a bachelorette party menu is good friends, good times and good food!

The use of pineapple plaques highlighted with the warm, arresting words "Welcome to our Home" has come to be a coarse sight. The Shirley Plantation highlights 3.5 feet of wooden pineapple constructed in the late 1700s on the peak of the roof line as a show of hospitality and as an invitation to river travelers coming to the plantation. The establishment also highlights the use of beautiful pineapple motifs within its premises.

No one can therefore dispense the historical, group and economic impact of the pineapple fruit which was once compared to the pinecone. While the output of pineapples have fueled the economies for the states of Florida and Hawaii, the symbolic designs and good looks of the pineapple has also led to much inspiration in decorating concepts and designs using unique pineapple themed accessories for the home and garden. The pineapple also continues to inspire the hospitality commerce in many of these states which were responsible for providing this fruit to the rest of the Americas, highlighting the deep meaning attached to the seal of the pineapple.

In our experience, there are definite behaviors that detach individuals who struggle with weight from those individuals who do not. There is much that can be learned from individuals who do not struggle with weight (the plainly thin). In the remainder of this article, we will discuss four of the secrets of the plainly thin.

Food And Dessert

Secret 1: plainly thin individuals never diet

Diets do not work. Current investigate shows that for the majority of individuals, diets cause weight gain, not weight loss. In one study, only 1 percent of individuals who lost weight on a diet had kept it off after ten years. Those are not good odds. Maybe even more troubling is that dieting can harm you by causing binge eating, emotional eating, increased appeal of restricted foods, and other eating disorders.

Diets do not work because they cause us to stop listening our bodies. In working with individuals struggling with weight and in researching overweight kids and adults for the last some years, we have heard many private stories of weight struggle. While the stories differ greatly, one common element is that the weight struggle began when the someone started dieting and/or counting calories. Following any type of restrictive eating program can cause us to stop listening to our body cues of when and how much to eat. Once an private begins to override the hunger and satiety cues the body provides, it can be difficult to sound their adored weight.

Secret 2: plainly thin habitancy eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full

Yes, it is true and it is that simple. I know it is hard for habitancy who struggle with weight to understand this completely, but we have found that the one major unlikeness is that the plainly thin eat only when they are hungry and only up until the point of satisfaction.

Our bodies tell us when to eat by manufacture us feel hungry, then tell us when to stop by manufacture us feel full. These are known as hunger and satiety cues, and they are there because they are important to our survival. Obviously, we must eat in order to live, but less definite is that we must also stop eating when we are full (satiated).

The first step in starting to eat like a plainly thin someone is to come to be aware of when you are hungry as well as to come to be aware of the ensue that food is having on your body when you are eating. And, Maybe most importantly, we must listen to our bodies when they tell us they are full.

Secret 3: plainly thin habitancy eat anything they want whenever they want

Many teens try to lose weight by cutting out definite types of foods or drinks from their diet, such as burgers, French fries, sodas. Although this seems like a good idea, food bans and food rules can trigger harmful behaviors such as binge eating, emotional eating, and an increased appeal for restricted foods.

Enforcing food rules for yourself, such as, I do not eat anything with more than 5 grams of fat per serving, I have only a salad each day for lunch, and I never drink regular soda can truly set you up to gain more weight than if you did not enforce these rules on yourself. plainly thin habitancy eat anything they want. The unlikeness between plainly thin habitancy and the rest of us is that they effortlessly and plainly eat anything they want when they are hungry and stop when they are full. They do not restrict their diets in any way. They eat sweetmeat whenever they feel like it. If they like soda and they feel like one, they have one. If they like French fries, they have French fries.

Some researchers think that enforcing food rules for ourselves causes us to override our body cues that tell us when and how much to eat. When we stop listening to our bodies, it becomes hard to balance our calorie intake and power expenditure over time. Infants and young children are ordinarily very good at balancing their calorie with their power expenditure by eating when they are hungry and stopping when they are full. You do not need to beat yourself up for eating definite foods. Thin habitancy do not do this and this is one of the reasons they stay thin effortlessly.

When we learned this about plainly thin people, we were surprised to learn that there is truly only one suspect to eat. Like others struggling with weight, we were eating for hundreds of other reasons, such as, food is costly and should not be wasted, and there are starving habitancy who do not get an chance to eat meals like this so I best eat it all. What is True Ice Wine?

One would expect ice wine to have a long history in winemaking, but it does not. In fact, ice wine has only been nearby for about 200 years. The prevailing law of its "birth" centers on a German winemaker who was surprised by an early frost. He decided to press the freezing grapes anyway, but separated them from the rest of his vintage so as to avoid ruining everything. To his surprise, the resulting wine was pure and sweet.

Ever since, ice wine has been produced to some degree in all wine producing countries of the Northern hemisphere, along with Austria, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland and others.

Food And Dessert

The variation between ice wine and other sweetmeat wines is that ice wines show a much clearer fruit and varietal character. This is because other sweet wines are made from botrytis ("noble rot") affected grapes, or with grapes that have been laid out and dried. Because ice wine grapes are wholesome at harvest, a good estimate of acidity remains, which gives the wine a raciness that other sweetmeat wines commonly have to a far lesser degree.

True ice wine is that made from grapes that are kept on the vine until the climatic characteristic sinks below -19.4 Fahrenheit or -7 degree Celsius. In the U.S., New Zealand and some other regions, winemakers have started producing simulated ice wine by tossing the grapes into a industrial freezer. These simulated ice wines are determined to be of lesser ability and will typically sell at half the price of ice wine made in the traditional way.

Both methods do hire the same basic idea: a grape is made up mostly of water, and since only the water will ice at these low temperatures, the sweet grape nectar can be pressed from the grapes while the freezing water remains trapped in the skins.

It is primary to harvest on the first freezing night of the year, because grapes left on the vine to go through a freeze-thaw-refreeze cycle can pick up unwanted flavors. Winemakers are often nervous wrecks by harvest time, as they will have spent night after night waking up repeatedly to check the temperature.

"Keeping the harvest workers ready can be a tedious and embarrassing task" says Franz Heiss, head winemaker of the respected Heiss Winery in Austria. He will often have to wake up a dozen harvest workers for the fifth or sixth time, only to see someone else night pass without the desired temperatures quite being reached.

The best ice wines are clear and vibrant in their flavors and aromas. The aromatic Scheurebe grape has properties that make it a popular option for use in crafting great ice wine. The stunning 2002 Eiswein by the noted Austrian Gsellmann and Gsellmann winery exemplifies this perfectly.

Traminer is someone else aromatic varietal that results in great ice wines. Specialist sweet wine vintner Franz Heiss makes a stunning ice wine from this grape, of which the 2001 and the 2002 vintages stand out. He has also made ice wine with the red grape Blaufränkisch, and the ensue is a magic rose-colored version with notes of exotic berries. As he explains it: "An ice wine made from red grapes is very uncommon. The freezing of the grapes influences the aromas greatly, and this is especially true when the grapes are red."

In Austria, where the wine laws are the strictest in all of Europe, only ice wines created by mother Nature are allowed to carry the proud name. So, if Austrian ice wines are then determined to be some of the most authentic and true ice wines, one could argue that an ice wine from Austria's flagship grape, Grüner Veltliner, is the truest ice wine of all. Manfred Weiss of the Weiss Winery in the Burgenland region made a Grüner-only ice wine in 1999 and a cuvee of Grüner and Welschriesling in 2001. He prefers to use Grüner Veltliner for his ice wine because it is resistant to botrytis, so the end ensue has particularly clean and clear notes.

Finding these great ice wines can be roughly as difficult as making them. As the production method suggests, quantities are very limited, and the estimate exported to the United States limits availability even more. Add to that the fact that every year nearby the holidays, most major food and wine publications run a story about ice wine, and what there is to be found on your local retailers shelf is swiftly snapped up. There are, however, a few online retailers who specialize in these wines: Winemonger.com is one example, with a wide option of Austrian wines along with a estimate of ice wines. Or a uncomplicated online hunt of the name of an ice wine maker, such as the ones mentioned in this article, will yield sources. Seeing a great, true ice wine is legitimately worth the effort, though: there is nothing else quite like this spectacular sweetmeat wine specialty.
