Toffee Crunch Bars
Food And Dessert
1 c. Shortening (like Crisco, do Not use butter or margarine)
1 c. Brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. Vanilla
2 c. Flour
1 tsp. Salt
Cream shortening and brown sugar. Add egg and vanilla and beat well. Mix in flour and salt. Press into greased jelly roll pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes (until brown on the edges). Frost immediately with chocolate powdered sugar frosting (recipe follows).
Powdered Sugar Frosting
2 c. Powdered sugar
2 Tbsp. Shortening
2 Tbsp. Unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp. Salt
Milk
Put the dry ingredients into a saucepan. Add enough milk to make a thick paste. Stir over low heat until the shortening melts and all is well combined. Add an additional one tablespoon or so of milk to make the frosting runny. As soon as the toffee bars come out of the oven, pour the frosting over the hot bars. Use a knife to spread it wholly over the whole surface. The frosting will set as the bars cool. Cut the bars into squares when the frosting has set. Store well covered at room temperature.
