My first meal consisted of beef stew and potatoes with a Tunisian hot pepper sauce and Moroccan spiced carrots. The wine was earthy and somewhat suited tasting of black cherries and tobacco. This Pinot Noir had no issue dealing with the meat's spicy sauce.

The second meal was an Atlantic salmon marinated in a commercial Italian-style grill sauce. The fish was accompanied by potatoes roasted in chicken fat. The wine was round and earthy, and relatively long. There was some aftertaste.

The final pairing complicated a purchased barbecued chicken breast, once again potatoes roasted in chicken fat, and caponata, Italian style eggplant with tomatoes, garlic, and olives. Quite surprisingly the wine was plummy. The compound was excellent, bringing out the fruit in the wine.

Something happened and I did not get to taste this wine with cheese. As you may know, I am not normally all that happy with wine and cheese pairings. Anyway, my apologies and at least for the time being I plan to go back to wine and cheese tastings.

Final verdict. I think that the wine was overpriced. To my way of reasoning a wine priced in the mid-twenties it should have been excellent more than once out of three tastings. I by all means; of course won't buy it again just to try the wine and cheese pairings. And there is no way to get authentic Bouillabaisse this far from Marseille.

The first hurricane, Hurricane Charley, caused our electricity to go out for 5 days. We did not suffer any structural damage, luckily, but we lost all the contents of our fridge and freezer.

We had precisely forgotten all about our Mres at the time. We did not properly get ready for Hurricane Charley. We had that "it won't happen to us" mentality.

After the hurricane, we spent two days eating cold spaghetti-o's before we remembered the box of Mres we had purchased for camping. Out they came! The whole house ate much best those last three days without electricity than the first two! in the middle of the hurricanes, we did have the sense to restock our Meals Ready to Eat and have always made it a point to keep them on hand since then.

The second hurricane that hit us that year did some structural damage, but we retained power. The third hurricane left us without power again, this time for over a week. With two small children at home, I can tell you that hurricane season that year was not fun. In Central Florida, you need air conditioning to survive. Going a few weeks without air conditioning was trying to say the least.

Couple that with being holed up in a dark apartment with no Tv, petite light, and nothing to do. The only thing to break the monotony of those days was the fun we had when we ate our Mre meals. The kids (and adults) had a blast occasion up each bag, cooking the entrees over the flameless heater, and devouring the enthralling snacks provided. It was the only source of amusement while this trying time.

In short, every hurricane preparedness pantry needs to have a case of Meals Ready to Eat available, not just for food, but to break up the boredom.

I Love German Wine and Food - A Mosel Riesling Auslese

You may remember the days of cheap oversweet German Rieslings that turned many population away from Riesling and German whites in general. This is not such a wine. Even if you don't like sweet white wine I think you should try one or a similar wine, you may be pleasantly surprised. Today's wine comes from a family-owned winery specializing in Riesling. The Baeumler-Becker winery is placed in the Mosel region of the Rhineland in western central Germany not far from Alsace, France.

As explained below, the producer is going out of the wine business. Let us hope that they will still be contribution tourist rooms and apartments whose prices seem very inexpensive for this lovely tourist region in the heart of German wine country. Wehlen is part of the city of Bernkastel, supreme for its wines and medieval market square. There are beautiful half-timbered houses and the remains of a castle. The Mosel valley is known for some of the best Riesling in Germany, which means some of the best Riesling in the world. P. S. Baumler-Becker Erben Riesling Auslese 1995 7% alcohol

Let's start by quoting the marketing materials. After 200 years in business, the tiny P. S. Baumler-Becker Erben winery is closing its doors. This is not due to the potential of the wines, which has all the time been exceptional, but strictly because the winemaker/owner is retiring and there are no willing heirs to take up the mantle. Our loss, then, but here's a opportunity to try an earlier vintage that is just now brilliantly hitting its stride. Look for pretty peach, pear, petrol and slate aromas and flavors. It has evolved over the years into a drier style, so it comes over more like a Spatlese than an Auslese. And now for my review.

When I tasted this wine without food it was delicate; tasting of lime and peach with light acidity and just a touch of sweetness. The introductory pairing was with a purchased eggplant parmigiana liberally doused with grated Parmesan cheese. Both the wine's acidity and sweetness stepped up. The wine's sweetness was very pleasant with the dish's tomatoes and it had fine length. On the downside this Riesling lost its flavor when facing a high potential French lemon pie with a buttery crust.

The next meal centered on homemade chicken nuggets in an orange-flavored, rather spicy Thai dipping sauce. This wine was very elegant and syrupy. It was long and offered a tiny bit of smoke. The side dish was a chickpea, canned corn, and Lebanese cucumber salad. This Auslese's sweetness was tasty as was the lime. I supreme with two desserts. When paired with a brownie this wine was very long and feathery. A slice of apple cake showcased the wine's fine acidity and the wine's lime complemented the apples.

My final meal complex baked chicken legs with a soy-maple sauce, potato salad, and bean salad. The Riesling showed honey and lemon with light acidity. It was palate cleansing and I got floral tastes. It was sweet and syrupy and seemingly unaffected by the potato salad. When facing the bean salad in vinegar, this wine toned down. But it became longer.

The first cheese was a rich cream cheese (24% butterfat). This cheese was rather somewhat sweet even though no sugar was added. The Auslese was long and delicious, a great compound of honey and acidity. A Swiss cheese weakened the wine but it was still excellent.

Final verdict. Do you have to ask? I am partial to this kind of wine and felt this bottle was an exquisite example and the price was right. I brought a bottle to my wine tasting group and it was quite popular. One final note, if you like such wine you can pair it with a wide range of foods. I tried some with beef ribs in a sweet tomato sauce and the marriage was a success. Personally I would have hesitated if the sauce were not sweet. But it might have worked well anyway. One more thing, I don't think you'll miss the alcohol in this fine wine.

Fun Valentines Day Ideas

Valentines Day, February 14th, is a fun day for both young and old! It is a day to think of those we love and celebrate friendship and kindness. It was one of my favorite winter holidays when the kids were younger as I loved all the hoopla of the parties in school, Scouts and Sunday School. It was a break from the winter doldrums! I loved going to the store to let them each pick out their own Valentines. Back then "computer printables" were not in the vocabulary, if you can believe it! We bought the old fashioned boxed cards that you tore apart on the perforated lines. They loved to pick out their own themes, be in Ninja Turtles, Super Heroes, Care Bears, or Cabbage Patch Kids. Yes, I am assuredly dating myself as I think back on those years! Then we would take boxes and each one would wrap and decorate their own private mailboxes! As Valentines began arriving from relatives; into the box they would go till Valentines Day!

In our home, we always added a component of giving to the day. We would bake and deliver home made cookies to elderly neighbors. We'd secure coins in a big decorated Valentines Day jug that we had decorated after shortly after Christmas and have fun watching it grow. On Valentines Day we would count the coins and determine where we would donate the monies. One year it was the local volunteer Fire department as my son idea since the trucks were red and Santa always visited the town with the firemen each year, that they should receive the gift. We made presents for all the grandparents, which are still around today at Grandma and Grandpa's house! We tried to make the kids focus on the ideas of loving and caring as well as the fun of receiving.

Over the years we have done dissimilar things to celebrate on the actual day but their all time favorite was the "Sweet Treat" special. From the time they got up, they could eat their meal in anything order they wanted. I put all the food out on the table from main course to desserts and they could eat it in anything order they wanted! Probably the absolute worst idea ever and I would most likely be scolded by nutritionists and pediatricians alike, but they are all grown now and no worse for the wear and it continues to be one of their favorite Valentines Day memories!

As they got older, my husband and I began to have adult Valentines Day parties. Sometimes it was out to dinner with friends then back to our house for dessert. Other times it was a cocktail party or a desserts and drinks gathering. We would always cap the night off with a fun game and I truly think that was the highlight of the party.

Nuts and seeds are a good source of protein and fiber and help you to feel full, but be right as they are high in calories. Low fat cheese is also good for both daily and protein.

What are whole grains? They supply the needed fiber to your diet. Check the labels on your breads and other products. If it does not say 100% whole wheat, it probably is not. Many types of bread say wheat bread, but have small if any whole wheat in them. Pasta now comes in many forms of whole grains. It used to be that whole wheat pasta did not taste all that good, but today it is very palatable, and it is an easy way to get the needed fiber into your diet. An easy way to get a lot of your fiber is in cereal. Some has as much as 15 grams of fiber. Check the labels and aim for at least 5 grams. Most of the high fiber cereals have less sugar, too.

The good fats are olive oil and other vegetable oils, especially canola, safflower and the nut oils. Stay away from Any trans fats. What about butter or margarine? agreeing to the latest research, a trans fat-free margarine is the best. It does not have the saturated fat that butter has. You can also use olive oil as a dipping sauce with your bread instead of a spread. It is leading that you have fats in your diet, so use them. I keep a bottle of olive oil on my counter and use it for most everything. I even use it in baking! No one is the wiser.
